Foamed glass aggregate is an innovative building material made from 100% post-consumer recycled glass. Scroll to see how it's made and an insight into Foamed Glass UK Ltd.
An Insight Into How Foamed Glass Aggregate Is Produced
Raw glass is conveyed into the plant and a powerful magnet removes and metallic particles which are sent to recycling.
The glass is passed through a high-speed roller mill to form a very fine powder. The particles are approx. 0.03mm size.
The glass powder is transferred to a mixer and a small amount of foaming agent is added. The mixture is then deposited on a slow-moving belt which travels through the kilns in a continuous operation.
At this point once fully cooled, the Foamglass aggregate is at full strength, stability and ready for use.
The glass is dried and any unwanted material such, as labels and organic residue, is removed. The clean, dry glass is then transferred to the grinding mill in a continuous operation. Filtration systems capture any dust and is fully recycled
The glass powder is stored in one of 5 x silos
The mix is heated in a controlled profile. It semi-melts and begins to expand as fine gas cells are formed. The expanded foamed glass exits the kilns approx. 3-4 times the original volume.
The Foamglass gets conveyed outside ready for crushing and screening to the necessary grades of size. The resulting product is exceptionally low-weight, strong, angular, clean and a superb thermally insulating material.
